ALBANY, NY -- A surgeon at the Albany Medical Center performed the first robotic surgery in New York state by operating on a woman needing a gastric bypass in order to lose weight. Gastric bypass reduces the size of the stomach b creating a small pouch in the upper part of the stomach. The pouch bypasses part of the small intestine, resulting in the patient feeling fuller after eating. The operation entailed doctors standing at a separate console, which received video from small instruments placed in the patient’s abdomen, and performing the operation remotely.
